How people made love in the Middle Ages
How people made love in the Middle Ages
Everyone knows that sɛx was not viewed with good eyes by the Church.
What you didn't know, maybe, is that priests had the obligation to report cases of adultery and pre-marital sɛx (such secrets were in confession, very fashionable at that time).
Sinners risked harsh punishments, from years of self-flagellation (they whipped themselves with ropes) to death.
Positions accepted by the Church
The missionary position (classic, we know, but effective) was the only sɛxual position accepted by the Church in the Middle Ages.
Any deviation from this (such as the woman on top, on the back or others) was considered unnatural and severely punished, as a sin.
Women who dared to stand over the man during sɛxual intercourse received three years of penance (prayers, self-flagellation, etc.). or@l sɛx was also punished with three years of fasting, prayer, imprisonment or corporal punishment.
