Edward James "Ed" Begley


 Edward James "Ed" Begley, Sr. (March 25, 1901 – April 28, 1970)

He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Sweet Bird of Youth (1962). Some of his other notable films include 12 Angry Men (1957) as juror #10, The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964) and Wild in the Streets (1968). Among his many Broadway credits were All My Sons and Inherit the Wind. He dropped out of school as a fifth-grader, Begley ran away from home several times, going to work for "carnivals, fairs, and small circuses". Later he sold brushes, delivered milk, and served four years in the United States Navy during World War I. Making his show business debut in 1931 as a radio actor and announcer, he first appeared on Broadway in 1943 and gained prominence in Arthur Miller's play All My Sons (1947). In all, Begley appeared in thousands of radio broadcasts, 250 television shows, 35 films, and a dozen Broadway plays. He was married three times, and is the father of the actor and environmental advocate Ed Begley, Jr. Ed Begley Sr. died of a heart attack at age 69, and is buried at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills, California.
