People love to act like picky eating is just stubbornness

People love to act like picky eating is just stubbornness, but they forget something important.

Some foods feel safe to kids because they are always the same.
The same texture.
The same color.
The same taste every single time.

Mac and cheese tastes like mac and cheese no matter what.
Crackers crunch the same way every day.
Chicken nuggets look predictable on every plate.
There’s comfort in that.
There’s stability.
There’s no guesswork.

Then there are foods that feel unpredictable.
A strawberry today might be sweet, but tomorrow it might be mushy.
A banana browns faster than you can blink.
Vegetables can taste different depending on how long you cook them or where you bought them.
One bite is crunchy, the next bite is soft.
For a little kid who is still figuring out the world that can feel overwhelming.

It’s not just about flavor.
It’s about trust.
It’s about their senses.
It’s about knowing what to expect when so much of life is still brand new.

So when your child clings to the same foods over and over it doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong.
It means they’ve found something that feels predictable in a world that is anything but.
And with time patience and gentle exposure they will grow.
They will try more.
They will get braver.

But for now it’s okay if safe foods are part of the routine.
It’s okay if they need consistency while everything else is still big and loud and new.
