Mary Miles Minter

Mary Miles Minter, 1902-1984, appeared in 53 films between 1912 and 1923 but only 16 survive. Her career came to a halt due to association with William Desmond Taylor who was murdered in 1922. Minter was 20 and Taylor was 49 and while she was never a suspect, love letters found in his home from 1919 and a few of her personal effects ruined her career. Some believe her mother, Charlotte Selby, was the murderer.

She reconciled with her mother who died in 1957 and with investments in real estate, Minter lived comfortably, and she claimed she was content without a Hollywood career. She died of a stroke at age 82 and she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1724 Vine Street.
