La Roue


"La Roue" (English: "The Wheel") is a monumental silent film directed by Abel Gance and released in 1923. It is considered one of the masterpieces of silent cinema and a landmark in film history for its technical innovations and epic storytelling.

The film tells the story of Sisif, a locomotive engineer, who adopts an orphaned girl named Norma. As she grows up, Norma falls in love with Sisif's son, Elie. However, their love is complicated by family secrets, societal pressures, and tragic events. The narrative spans several years and explores themes of love, fate, and the relentless cycle of life symbolized by the wheel of a train.

"La Roue" is notable for its innovative visual techniques, including rapid editing, elaborate camera movements, and montage sequences that were ahead of its time. Abel Gance employed complex cinematography to create dynamic and immersive storytelling, showcasing the power and potential of the medium.
