Communicatie

The Unbroken Dream

The Duke of Laverdale is ambitious to be appointed Master of the Horse and the new Queen Adelaide is determined that behaviour at Court should be moral after the licentiousness of King George IV. The Duke therefore ends his affaire de coeur with the enchanting Lady Sybil Mersham and drops his ballet dancer mistress as well. Up to now he has been determined not to be married, but he now decides to become respectable and find a suitable bride as befits his standing. As he has always avoided debutantes, he asks the Marquis of Coleburn, whom he has known since he was a boy, to help him. The Marquis is delighted and tells the Duke that he has the perfect wife for him in his beautiful daughter Oleta, who would have been a debutante by now but for family mourning. The Duke arranges to visit the Marquis, who returns home to tell his daughter that she is a very lucky girl. Oleta, however, is horrified at the idea of marrying a man she has never seen and who obviously cannot be in love wit...

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)

On Halloween day, Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant,) a just-married writer/critic who had previously based his reputation on being a bachelor, becomes worried about the safety of his bride (and potential offspring) when he finds out that it’s not just one uncle who is nuts, but also his two elderly aunts (Josephine Hull and Jean Adair) and brother (Raymond Massey, of whom he was suspicious anyway.) A very tight film adaptation of a popular play with not a moment or line wasted, but with some cartoonish, dated notions on mental illness. It’s a farce so, for the most part that's not really a big deal. The least dangerous individual is an uncle (John Alexander) who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt and who is clueless he is being used to dispose of the bodies of murder victims. We are encouraged to believe that these are nice people who are nice looking, polite and do charity (at least the aunts are,) but their history includes additional sadistic acts (ā€œ Remember the needles under the fingern...

A Road to Romance

The Marquis of Whisinford and his friend Lord Alfred Middleton meet at White’s Club and tell each other how bored they are with the London Season and the same parties with the same people night after night. They commiserate with each other for finding life so repetitive where nothing new ever happens. Listening to them, the old Duke of Dunstead tells them that he has a solution to their problem and so he bets one of his well bred horses against one of theirs that, if they go out disguised as ordinary men, they will undoubtedly find an adventure of some kind on the open road. Because it is a bet and betting at White’s is traditional, the Marquis agrees to ride North as far as Northumberland disguised as an ordinary man, while Lord Alfred is to go South to Land’s End. The Marquis sets off alone, his only possessions being what he can carry on his horse, Samson, using the name of Neil Barlow. But he has not gone very far when a very pretty girl joins him on the road in a state of ag...

Harvey (1950)

This is the first Jimmy Stewart movie I ever saw, and for the longest time I thought Stewart's slow, drawling delivery was an indication that his character was drunk. Imagine my surprise when I saw my second Stewart movie! I guess this could count as a sort of late screwball comedy, except for the fact that it's such a gentle, light fantasy with the comedy content also being quite light. It's certainly lumped with screwball comedies ( "...if you liked Harvey..." ) The premise of the fantastic invisible friend dates probably back to Crockett Johnson's  Barnaby  comic strip and forward to  Oh God!, American Werewolf In London, Calvin & Hobbes, Fight Club, Donnie Darko  (of course) and is spoofed in the  'Hymie'  episode with Daffy Duck. Harvey probably indicates a preference to a sort of madness, alcoholism equated to fantasy, or a rejection of reality values that has much in common with  You Can't Take it With You . Sure, it's easy to be ecc...

Minnie Julia Riperton Rudolph

Minnie Julia Riperton Rudolph (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979), known professionally as Minnie Riperton. She was best known for her 1975 single "Lovin' You". Her early affiliation with the legendary Chicago-based Chess Records afforded her the opportunity to sing backup for various established artists such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters. While at Chess, Riperton also sang lead for the experimental rock/soul group Rotary Connection, from 1967 to 1971. On April 4, 1975, Riperton reached the apex of her career with her #1 single, "Lovin' You". The single was the last release from her 1974 gold album entitled Perfect Angel. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1976, and underwent a radical mastectomy. Despite this, the cancer had already spread and she was not expected to live much longer. However, Minnie continued to record and became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. Rip...

Fijne dag gewenst :-)

A Train To Love

The beautiful Lola Fenton lives happily in a small cottage in the depths of Worcestershire, but she is suddenly orphaned when her father and mother are killed in a railway crash. Her uncle, the Earl of Kencombe, comes to the funeral and then tells her that, as she has no money, she will have to come and live with him. He obviously has no wish for her to do so, but feels that it is his duty as her legal Guardian. Her mother, Lady Cecilia Combe, had run away with her father and was ostracised by her family for doing so as he had been employed to be a Tutor to her brother. Lola feels that she cannot face the future with people who will continually be telling her how badly her mother had behaved and she therefore goes to London and visits an employment agency. As she is so lovely and so young it seems unlikely that there will be anything to suit her. However, the Marquis of Halaton has been desperately trying to find someone who could repair the curtains in his famous Elizabethan hou...

Blithe Spirit (1945)

David Lean directed this black comedy about a writer (Rex Harrison) who calls on Mme. Arcati (Margaret Rutherford), a lively, eccentric medium in order to gather notes on the conducted sĆ©ance for a prospective murder mystery. The trouble is, of course, that the medium ends up being the real thing and she brings the spirit of his deceased first wife (Kay Hammond) over from beyond the veil to much chagrin and a jealous reaction of the writer's living second wife (Constance Cummings.) Other than the medium no one (up to and including the ghosts) takes the subject of death or spiritualism (which as it turns out is a very hit and miss affair that relies on a lot of guesswork) very seriously so the overall touch remains quite light despite being undeniably macabre. I can't really say for sure that this is what inspired  Beetlejuice  (1988, though there are obvious shared elements (including a vehicular bridge accident and the ghoulish visuals) since there is that Joe Dante directed ...

Thanks for the Memory (1938)

Afbeelding
Thanks for the Memory  (1938) Clearly a filmed play, and another odd, early Bob Hope role in which he plays a would-be published writer, except for (mainly) his busy social married life, but also having to support his former-model-but-no-longer-working wife (Shirley Ross,  va-va-voom! ) and thereby being able to write only on Sundays. A lot of time is spent on a long night of partying; so much so, that one begins to wonder  when exactly the plot-defining conflict is to surface.  Sure, they don’t have money to pay their bills, but they seem happy enough and don’t seem to much mind their social life intruding on  his  writing time. It takes a while to get there, but a former boyfriend, and an attractive Southern neighbor begin to cause a bit of friction, but  still  not nearly enough for the plot. It’s only when he quits his job and begins to resent having turned into ā€˜a kept man’ that trouble boils over. They have a big fight and separate for a few...

No Bride, No Wedding

Calina Hart’s mother, the lovely Lady Carol Wood, was being forced by her ambitious father, the Earl of Hurstwood, to marry the Duke of Denholme, who is dull, boring and a poor rider – but is a Duke! Early in the morning of the day of her Wedding to the Duke Lady Carol runs away with John Hart, a brilliant trainer of her father’s horses, whom she has fallen in love. The Earl is furious and the Duke is made to look a fool. Society is understandably scandalised and fascinated by the story of the runaway bride. Lady Carol and John Hart marry at once and then escape to Cornwall and nobody knows their whereabouts and soon their adored daughter, Calina, is born and she becomes more beautiful every year. Lady Carol and John Hart have a blissful life together until he John tragically dies of a virulent fever in Egypt whilst taking four outstanding horses he had trained to the Khedive. When Lady Carol herself dies of a broken heart, Calina is left orphaned. Although Calina does not have m...
