Castle by the Sea
The castle tower by the sea, Bergen, Norway.
During the High Middle Ages, King Magnus the Lawmender (1238-1280) was in possession of two defense and residence towers that stood out from other defense facilities. The "Castle by the Sea" in Bergen and the "The Brick Tower" in Tønsberg were strong and potent symbols of the king's power.
The castle by the sea, which today bears the name The Rosenkrantz Tower, was the central tower of Bergen castle.
The castle by the sea was completed around 1270. King Magnus' large castle tower in Bergen lives on in many ways in the Rosenkrantz tower. The sheriff of Bergenhus fortress, Erik Rosenkrantz (1519-1575), expanded the old castle so that it became an even larger and more towering defense and residence tower in the 1560s. The tower became both wider and taller, and was equipped with the innovations of the time, - cannons. But the core of the tower is king Magnus medieval castle, where you can see, among other things, the king's private living room and chapel.
Due to the different building eras (1270-1560), the old defense tower has a peculiar ground plan and room arrangement with, among other things, shifts in the floor height. But with its strategic location in the south wing, the tower has been a cornerstone of the castle system at Bergenhus Fortress.
