Örebro Castle

Örebro Castle is located on an islet in the water basin formed by the river Svartån in the center of the Swedish city Örebro. It is first mentioned in a letter in the year 1364. In the letter written by Duke Albrekt, it is said that the castle has been taken by force of arms. There are slightly different opinions about when the castle was created.
The medieval castle consisted of a gray stone wall that formed a rectangle of 48 x 26 meters in circumference. In the south-west corner, we find the keep, a defense tower of 12 meters square that rises 30 meters above the ground in 6 floors. At the bottom, the walls are 4 meters thick, but decrease upwards in the floors. We can see this tower today in the south-west corner of the building itself, the round towers are much later additions. In the north-west corner there was a smaller tower, in front of the wall in the east there was a gate tower. During the period of the Scandinavian union from 1397 to 1523, the castle was in periods at the disposal of Danish union kings. It was besieged several times, in 1434 by Engelbrekt's rebel army. The castle was surrendered and Engelbrekt sat here as lord of the castle for two years.
The old castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance castle in the years 1573 – 1627 under Charles IX. The medieval ring wall and tower were built into the new castle's buildings and the round towers were added. In the years 1897 – 1901, the castle was restored and got its current appearance.
