The Walton Hamner House

The Walton Hamner House

The original Walton home. The boyhood home of Earl Hamner, Jr., the novelist that inspired the hit television show, The Waltons. Depicted after his upbringing, he was in fact, John Boy. The show aired from 1971-1981 and won an Emmy in 1974.
Located in the village of Schuyler in Nelson County, Virginia, built by M.J. Copps, the manager of a local soapstone quarry who purchased the land in 1915. The home was later sold to the Hamner family in 1929. The white two story, 1,600 square foot home with its recognizable gabled roof sits on a 1/3 acre lot. Its notable features include double hung windows, an eat-in kitchen with ample space for a long table, a first floor master bedroom and a spacious bathroom, with a claw foot tub. The house has a total of three bedrooms and beautiful pine and oak floors can be found throughout the living areas and upstairs. The stacked soapstone foundation was sourced from the nearby quarry.
The home was previously used as a bed and breakfast and recently came on the market. The Hamner house was listed for the price of $346,000. The seller also offered it with period furnishings for any business-minded person who wanted to keep the Hamner-Walton story going. However, it was sold in January 2023 and became a private residence. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
