Berry Pomeroy Castle

Berry Pomeroy Castle is rumoured to be one of the most haunted castles in England. Four of the most notorious ghosts are the Blue Lady, the White Lady, and the Two Brothers.

It is claimed that the Blue Lady beckons passersby for assistance, drawing them to her tower and leading them down winding passages until they are lost and cannot escape. It is said she is the daughter of a Norman ruler who wandered into the dungeons mourning the death of her infant, whom she murdered, as it was sired by her own father.

The White Lady is believed to be the spirit of Margaret Pomeroy, who was imprisoned in the dungeons and left to starve by her own sister Eleanor, who was jealous of her beauty.

The Two Brothers, dressed in full armour, are thought to have rode their horses up to the top of the castle ramparts and leapt to their deaths together.

Back in 2018, a group of friends visiting believed they had captured an image of the ghostly brothers and their spooky steeds.

Walking around the castle, the group of friends heard a noise that "sounded like an animal", but thought they had perhaps triggered a sensor alarm.

But when checking their photos later, they saw what appeared to be two ghostly figures on horses.

Berry Pomeroy Castle was one of the last of its kind to be built in England. It was home to the Seymour family; Edward Seymour bought the castle from the Pomeroy family in 1547.
