Think for yourself. Make up your own mind.

The Château de Lichtenberg

Afbeelding
The Château de Lichtenberg is a castle built on a singular prominence in the northern Vosges at the end of the village of Lichtenberg, Bas-Rhin department in Alsace in north-eastern France. The castle was first mentioned in 1206 and is most well known as the home of the Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg. It was left in ruins in 1870 after bombardment by Württemberg troops during the Franco-Prussian War, but was restored in the 1990s and is open to the public. History The castle is first mentioned in 1206, as home to the Lords of Lichtenberg. The Lichtenberg line passed to the Hanau family, who became the Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg. In the late 16th century, Phillip IV of Hanau-Lichtenberg hired Daniel Specklin, who had designed the fortifications of Strasbourg, to turn the castle into a fortress to use and protect against a new weapon: the cannon. In 1678, the castle capitulated to French troops after an eight-day siege. Like most of the castles in the Alsace region, it came under the contr...

Taitin

What was it like to be a Serf?

Afbeelding
What was it like to be a Serf? . In the Middle Ages, being a Serf, was only moderately better than being a peasant. While this line was often blurred in specific regions, there was a distinct difference between a free peasant and a serf. Serfs were bound to the land on which they lived, and they were the property of whoever owned the land. When the lord sold his land, the serfs were part of the purchase. Peasants were often just as poor as serfs, but they were not bound to the land and were able to live and move freely, so long as they paid their taxes in crops, money, or work. Serfs were given their own plot of land and their own personal quarters. It was generally understood that serfs did not own any of their possessions - they were property of the lord just as the serf was. As the land belonged to the lord, even the food that was harvested, also legally belonged to the lord. The serfs were responsible for building their own homes, and making their own clothing.

I’ll never forget my first year as a mom

I’ll never forget my first year as a mom. The way the feelings came in waves that didn’t stop. The fears that made my chest tight. The insecurities that kept me up even when the baby finally slept. The way I kept wondering if I was doing any of it right. But somehow I still showed up every single day. Shaky hands. Tired eyes. A heart learning how to stretch in ways it never had to before. And the wild part is that none of it had to be perfect. Because to them, I was already everything they needed. So to the women stepping into motherhood for the very first time, take it slow. Be soft with yourself. Your world is about to shift in the best and hardest ways. You will find your rhythm. You will find your confidence. And one day you’ll look back and realize you were doing a beautiful job long before you believed it.
