Herman Asenap (Grey Foot) was a respected tribal leader. He was a skilled interpreter for the Post Oak Mission and the U.S. Indian Service. He shared that his father was a Mexican captive who was believed taken as a young child in the mid-1860's. Herman's mother was a full blood Kwahada Comanche named Tahchockah who was born around 1858. Similar in a way to the history of Herman Asenap's father, the remarkable Comanche elder Herkeyah (Carrying Her Sunshade) was captured as a young girl in old Mexico. She had also lived an incredible and fascinating life as a Comanche captive and Comanche woman. With regard to Herkeyah's memory of an intense encounter between Herman's mother Tahchockah and the Tonkawas, she recounted that his mother was running away from several Tonkawa scouts who were in high pursuit of her. In the tail of her horse, Tahchockah effectively tied a knot and drove her horse into the water. As the Tonkawas were closing in, she held strongly onto the tai...

Mandy Patinkin

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." Mandy Patinkin has said that the role of Inigo Montoya in "The Princess Bride" (1987) is his personal favorite over the course of his entire career. Patinkin claims that the only injury he sustained during the entire filming of this movie was a bruised rib due to stifling his laughter in his scenes with Billy Crystal. His attempt at holding back his laughter is obvious from his facial expression during his line, "This is noble, sir." Patinkin and co-star Cary Elwes performed all of their own sword-fighting after many hours of training. According to director Rob Reiner, the only stunt performed by Elwes' stunt double was one flip during the "Chatty Duelists" scene. The pair Cary trained for months with Peter Diamond and Bob Anderson, who between them had been in the Olympics; worked on films from the "Lord of the Rings' trilogy to the "Star Wars...

Misery

On this date in 1990, "Misery" was released. The part of Paul Sheldon was originally offered to William Hurt (twice), then Kevin Kline, Michael Douglas, Harrison Ford, Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Richard Dreyfuss, Gene Hackman, and Robert Redford, but they all turned it down. Warren Beatty was interested in the role, wanting to turn him into a less passive character, but eventually had to drop out as post-production of "Dick Tracy" (1990) extended. Eventually someone suggested James Caan, who agreed to play the part. Caan commented that he was attracted by how Sheldon was a role unlike any other of his, and that "being a totally reactionary character is really much tougher." Jessica Lange and Barbra Streisand were up for the role of Annie Wilkes. Anjelica Huston was offered the role, and was interested, but was unable to accept it due to her commitment to "The Grifters" (1990). Bette Midler turned down the role because s...

In New Spain of the latter 1600's, the Utes had the ability to capture and maintain horses. Their horses allowed for movement and hunting over much greater distances. Around the same time, other Numic speaking people historically known as Comanches soon moved onto the landscape of the Great Plains. The Comanches (Nummuhnuh) and their Ute kinfolk quickly began a strong relationship as fellow tribesmen. The Spanish authorities noted the ever-growing power of the Utes and their Comanche allies. It was also noticed that the raiders from the North had extreme confidence in their abilities to raid communities. The Comanches and the Utes battled for control of the land and soon expanded their territory. In the early 1700's, the brethren tribes fought for excellent raiding and trading sites along the Rio Grande River. As both the Apache and Navajo were driven out, they sought help and protection from the Spanish. Over time, the Comanches had come to control the rich grasslands of the S...

In the 1920's, the Fancy War Dance had it's beginning with members of the Ponca tribe. The dance originated in Oklahoma and the first world champion fancy dancer was the late well-known Ponca dancer Augustus Hurley "Gus" McDonald. In 1926, he won the very first world title in dance competition at the Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas. Fancy dancers of the 1930's included men of various tribes such as the popular Comanche named George Woogie Watchetaker. In his lifetime, Woogie would eventually win seven national titles and three world titles as a fancy dancer. The men's fancy dance is both original and full of energy. From an interview of the early 1990's, Woogie shared his understanding of what made a good fancy dancer: "In my times, I was told by the older Indians that two good champions, two good dancers, a guy that could dance his footwork and his steps. Keeping time with the drum, keeping time with body movements, head movements, body movemen...

Afwijzing.

Afwijzing.

Woom-ma-konie

In 1883, a young Comanche girl named Woom-ma-konie became married to the Tennessee born Edward L. Clark. On the established KCA reservation, he served as a sub-Agent for negotiations with the local tribes and as an interpreter for the Comanches. Edward also was responsible for the distribution of medication on the reservation close to Fort Sill. In the 1880's, he had traveled with area tribal leaders including the Comanche Chief Kobi for important meetings in Washington, D. C. Woom-ma-konie Clark and Edward had eleven children. Kevin Hagen

Afbeelding

Comanches

Afbeelding
As Comanches were seen and highly regarded as outstanding horsemen, they were also observed by other people to have a copper-color about their skin with black eyes and hair. Comanches were well-built and seemingly of medium height. The men possessed just a little bit of facial hair but had a very prominent nose. They wore buckskin moccasins, leggings, and a breech clout. In colder times, a blanket or a bison robe would be worn over the man's shoulders. With regard to adornments worn by young men, the Comanche elder Frank Chekovi related that pierced ears were sought after when an individual wanted to dress up. The young man went to the tipi of an experienced person who knew how to pierce. One very red-hot needle was used. A greased straw was placed in the hole once it had been pierced. If more than one hole was desired on an ear, they were all done at the same time in order to properly heal. For instance, some young men liked shell beads and others rings that were worn along the ed...

Eve Arden

Afbeelding
Eve Arden (April 30, 1908 – November 12, 1990) Her almost 60-year career crossed most media frontiers with both supporting and leading roles, but to younger audiences she may be best-remembered for playing the sardonic but engaging title character, a high school teacher, on Our Miss Brooks, and as the Rydell High School principal in both Grease and Grease 2. Her many memorable screen roles include a supporting role as Joan Crawford's wise-cracking friend in Mildred Pierce (1945) for which she received an Academy Award nomination as Best Supporting Actress, and James Stewart's wistful secretary in Otto Preminger's murder mystery, Anatomy of a Murder (1959). (One of her co-stars in that film was husband Brooks West.) She also performed some acrobatics in the Marx Brothers film At the Circus (1939). Arden's ability with witty scripts made her a natural talent for radio; she became a regular on Danny Kaye's short-lived but memorably zany comedy-variety show in 1946, w...

Michael Landon

Afbeelding
Michael Landon was far more than just the beloved on-screen patriarch Charles Ingalls—he was the creative heartbeat of *Little House on the Prairie* from its inception in 1974 until its conclusion in 1983. Though he initially signed on as an actor, Landon quickly assumed control behind the camera, serving as executive producer, frequent director, and primary writer for many of the show’s most memorable episodes. His influence shaped not only the tone and pacing of the series but also its moral compass. Landon famously insisted that every episode carry a message—about kindness, justice, forgiveness, or resilience—and he often rewrote scripts to better align with his vision of “television with heart.” Under his leadership, *Little House* became more than a period drama; it evolved into a vehicle for empathy, using the hardships of 19th-century frontier life to explore timeless human struggles. Landon’s hands-on approach extended to nearly every aspect of production. He personally c...
