The Horn Blows at Midnight (1945)
Angel Jack Benny is assigned to come down to Earth (there are apparently several inhabited planets) to sound the trump of doom.
But having to rescue a suicidal girl he misses his chance and gets stuck down here. Two other renegade angels are pulling a Ninotchka (1939) scheme, and they try to seduce him into staying.
Some nice (angel choir) crowd effects in addition to a bunch of miniatures work are among the special effects in this funny, madcap comedy. The movie cheats with the dream ending thing, but it actually works really well because the film builds to a fever pitch and doesn't really need to resolve the issue of the destruction of the Earth. The dreamer simply wakes.
Directed by Raoul Walsh, the title of this film got dropped lots of times in The Jack Benny Program radio show. I guess it didn't do so well at the box office.
With Margaret Dumont, Franklin Pangborn, Bobby Blake, Mike Mazurki.
From the WB Collection. My disc had lots of artifacts by the end. I've found these discs not to be the best quality (the previous one I had lots of problems with was the Porky Pig Collection.)
Recommended, but good luck with getting a problem free disc.
