Mary of Habsburg
The wedding gown worn by Mary of Habsburg in 1520
.
This exquisitely preserved damask dress, is 500 years old!
It was worn by Mary of Habsburg, on her marriage to Louis II of Hungary, in 1522.
The gown is now owned by the Hungarian National Museum, and is one of few dresses to survive from that century.
It was previously kept in the church treasury of Mariazell Basilica, safely kept out of the way of light, and humidity.
The dress is an example of a late Burgundian gown, with its high, belted waist, and wide neckline.
It has a smocked ‘blouse’ underneath.
The gown is made from green damask silk, and the neckline is trimmed in gold brocade.
The smocked blouse is made from a finely woven linen.
