Raoul Wallenberg

Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat, risked his life to save tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust. Through protective passports, safe houses, and direct intervention, he became a symbol of courage and resistance against Nazi persecution.

In July 1944, as the Nazis escalated their mass deportations of Hungary’s Jewish population, Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg arrived in Budapest with a mission: to save as many lives as possible. With the backing of the Swedish government and the U.S. War Refugee Board, he launched an unprecedented rescue operation.
Wallenberg quickly devised a bold strategy, issuing Schutz-Passes, official-looking yet forged protective passports that declared the holders under Swedish protection. Though not officially recognized by the Nazis, these documents often prevented deportations. He and his team distributed thousands of them, sometimes even pulling Jews off the deportation trains at the last moment.
Beyond paperwork, Wallenberg established Swedish safe houses, which provided refuge for thousands of Jews. He fearlessly negotiated with Nazi officers, bribing and intimidating them into sparing lives. Even in the face of Adolf Eichmann’s deportation efforts, Wallenberg continued his work, using diplomatic pressure and sheer audacity to halt numerous death marches and transports.
By the time Soviet forces liberated Budapest in January 1945, Wallenberg had saved an estimated 100,000 Hungarian Jews. However, his fate took a tragic turn—he was arrested by the Soviet Red Army, suspected of espionage, and vanished into Soviet captivity. Despite decades of investigations, his ultimate fate remains a mystery, though reports suggest he died in a Soviet prison.
Today, Raoul Wallenberg is honored as one of the Righteous Among the Nations, a testament to the power of individual bravery in the face of unimaginable evil. His legacy lives on as a symbol of resistance, courage, and humanitarianism.
