Leah Goldberg

Afbeelding
Leah Goldberg An extremely prolific poet, author, playwright, translator, and researcher, Leah Goldberg’s writings are classics of Israeli literature. Leah Goldberg was born into a Jewish family in Kaunas, Lithuania. While Lithuanian, Leah was born in the German city of Konigsberg, as her mother hoped to give birth under better medical care. When WWI began, the Goldberg family escaped to Russia, where they lived under harsh conditions. Leah’s father was arrested when they tried to go back home to Lithuania, accused of being a Bolshevik spy. The torture and fake executions her father suffered destroyed him mentally and left him unable to care for the family. Leah’s parents spoke several languages. At a young age, she learned Hebrew, and began keeping a diary in the Jewish language at the age of 10. Although she was fluent in many European languages, Leah only wrote her published works – as well as her personal writings – in Hebrew. At age 15, she wrote a journal entry that highlighted t...

Maria Fedecka

Afbeelding
Maria Fedecka A Polish social worker, Maria Fedecka took part in the anti-Nazi resistance and was able to save countless Jewish children and families during the Holocaust. Living in a village near Vilna, Maria began her work saving Jews as soon as the Nazi occupation began. She opened the gates of her estate to Jewish refugees, providing them shelter, moral and material support, and forged documents to help them flee to permanent safety. During the war, Maria sheltered many children—such as six-year-old Amalia Szabad and an infant named Adlena Smilg—sheltering them despite the danger it posed to herself. She sheltered Amalia’s mother and aunt, as well, and took in tiny Adlena when the baby’s parents were about to give up hope in finding refuge for their daughter In 1987, ten years after Maria passed away, Yad Vashem named her Righteous Among the Nations, one of the gentile heroes of the Holocaust. But during Maria’s lifetime, she was honored with a Yiddish poem by acclaimed Israeli poe...

Esther Cailingold

Afbeelding
Esther Cailingold A British-born schoolteacher, Esther Cailingold fought for Israel during the 1948 War of Independence and was killed during the battle for Jerusalem’s Old City. Born in London to a Jewish family of Poland heritage, Esther Cailingold studied English but also developed a fervent belief in Zionism. This was due to her father having founded Poland’s Young Mizrachi movement. It was said that “Esther was a Zionist… before she knew of any formal movement or heard her first Zionist speech.” Esther ties to her biblical and historic heritage as part of God’s chosen people only strengthened as she became aware of Hitler’s rise to power, growing anti-Semitism throughout Europe, and the horrors of the Holocaust. Esther’s staunch Zionism ultimately led her to make aliyah (immigrate to Israel) in 1946 in order to teach English in Jerusalem. Esther arrived in Jerusalem before Israel’s independence and thus witnessed street violence against Jews, curfews and other restrictions against...

Dagkaart uit De Vampiers

Afbeelding

Alida Bosshardt

Alida Bosshardt A Dutch Christian and member of the Salvation Army, Alida Bosshardt sheltered and cared for many Jewish children during the Holocaust. Born into a Christian family in Utrecht, Netherlands, Alida Bosshardt showed herself to be independent and strong-willed from a young age. While still a teenager, she joined the Salvation Army. Alida began caring for children from broken homes in Amsterdam’s Jewish area. By 1941, four of the children Alida cared for were the Jewish Terhorst sisters—Hendrina, Helena, Dimphina, and Roosje. Around the same time, the Nazis began to persecute Dutch Jews, while also outlawing the Salvation Army and seizing the group’s property and funds. The house Alida ran, though, continued to house children, but as a private residence. Many Jewish families began bringing their babies to Alida, sure that she could find hiding places for the children. Alida did so, even carrying the young ones around Amsterdam on her bicycle. Soon, however, the Nazis closed d...

Feng-Shan Ho

Afbeelding
Feng-Shan Ho Feng-Shan Ho might not be a name familiar to many, but it should be. And Feng-Shan Ho might not be someone known by many of us who stand for the Jewish people, but it was well-known to the perhaps tens of thousands of Jewish lives saved by the actions of this man, known by some as “the Chinese Schindler.” One of these Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazis was Eric Goldstaub. In 1938, Feng-Shan Ho issued the Goldstaub family visas (Ho was Chinese diplomat in Vienna, Austria). These visas were truly lifesaving, as the Goldstaubs had spent “days, weeks, and months…trying to obtain visas for parents and near relatives, numbering some 20 people.” The visas to Shanghai allowed them to eventually reach safety in Canada. Another Jewish life saved by Ho was that of Lilith-Sylvia Doron. As the Nazis persecuted, arrested, and murdered the Jews of Vienna, Lilith’s brother Karl was among those taken. But Ho, who Lilith remembers would “visit our home on a permanent basis to protect us from...

Bette Davis

Afbeelding
Bette Davis once said, "Old age is no place for sissies," but she also emphasized that "a person's greatest asset is not a head full of knowledge, but a heart full of love, an ear ready to listen, and a hand willing to help others." This quote perfectly reflects the spirit of one of Hollywood's most enduring stars. Despite facing serious health issues in her later years, Davis remained actively committed to her career. Her determination to continue acting, even as her health declined, exemplified her passion and dedication to her craft. In the late 1970s, Davis was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy in 1983. This challenging time did not deter her from her work. Her fight against cancer symbolized her resilient spirit, much like the determination she brought to her most demanding roles. Although she faced physical pain and uncertainty, Davis refused to withdraw from public life or her profession. After her surgery, she experienced a se...

Dr. Rudolf Weigl

Afbeelding
Heroes of the Holocaust | Dr. Rudolf Weigl During the Holocaust, Dr. Rudolf Weigl saved Jewish lives with his medical work fighting disease, as well as his covert work sheltering Jews. While gas chambers and firing squads were the Nazis’ preferred methods of murder, disease also claimed millions of lives during WWII, including typhus, a bacterial infection that claimed many Holocaust victims, including Anne Frank. A professor of biology in Poland, Dr. Weigl focused on developing a vaccine for typhus, as none had yet been created. In the 1930s—after he had developed typhus himself during his research—his vaccine worked. The first beneficiaries were Christian missionaries in China. But the fight against disease was not the only war Dr. Weigl waged. He also resisted the anti-Semitism common in Poland, even before the Nazis invaded. Many of his friends and peers were Jewish, as were many of his students. When Poles acted out in hateful ways against their Jewish countrymen, Dr. Weigl protes...
