Woody Strode
The great legendary athlete, writer, and actor, Woody Strode, as "The King of Ethiopia", (and Bythia’s bearer), in the American epic religious drama film that was produced, directed, and narrated by Cecil B. DeMille, 'The Ten Commandments" (1956), based on the 'Exodus' story in The Bible, and several novels based on the 'Exodus' story. The film also featured Charlton Heston as "Moses"(and the voice of God at the Burning Bush), Yul Brynner as "Rameses II", Anne Baxter as "Nefretiri", Edward G. Robinson as "Dathan", Yvonne De Carlo as "Sephora", Debra Paget as "Lilia", John Derek as "Joshua", Sir Cedric Hardwicke as "Seti I", Nina Foch as "Bythiah", Martha Scott as "Yochabel", Judith Anderson as "Memnet", Vincent Price as "Baka", John Carradine as "Aaron", Olive Deering as "Miriam", Douglass Dumbrille as "Jannes", Frank de Kova as "Abiram", Henry Wilcoxon as "Pentaur", and Charleston Heston's own baby, Fraser Clarke Heston, as the baby "Moses".
Four years after his appearance in this film 'The Ten Commandments (1956), Woody Strode was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as "Draba" in the American epic historical drama film by Stanley Kubrick, 'Spartacus' (1960),also featuring Kirk Douglas in the titular role as "Spartacus", Laurence Olivier as "Crassus", Jean Simmons as "Varinia", Charles Laughton as "Gracchus", Peter Ustinov as "Batiatus", Tony Curtis as "Antoninus", John Gavin as "Julius Caesar", John Dall as "Marcus Glabrus", Nina Foch as "Helena Glabrus", and John Ireland as "Crixus".
Woody Strode was a renowned decathlete and football star who was one of the first Black American players in the National Football League in the postwar era. After football, he went on to become a film actor. Remembering Woodrow Wilson Woolwine Strode (July 25, 1914 – December 31, 1994).
