Catherine the Great
When Catherine the Great died, her body was displayed for six whole weeks!
She lie in one of the most impressive rooms in her palace, which was kept lit day and night.
While her corpse lay there, getting riper by the second in the lavish chamber, people would come by and kiss the rotting flesh of her hand.
The manner of Catherine’s passing has been the subject of myth and legend for hundreds of years.
An autopsy revealed the truth amidst all the lies.
The mighty Empress had actually succumbed to a brutal stroke, a sad end, but not a bestial one.
On 16th November 1796, Catherine rose early in the morning and had her usual morning coffee, soon settling down to work on papers.
She remarked to her lady's maid, that she had slept better than she had in a long time.
Sometime after 9:00am, she was found on the floor of her water closet, with her face purplish, her pulse weak, her breathing shallow and laboured.
Despite attempts to revive her she fell into a coma.
She was given the last rites, and died around 9:45, the following evening.
