Monsieur Beaucaire (1946)
Hope is the royal barber who escaping an execution ends up being confused and taking over for a swashbuckling heartthrob of a French count who was sent to marry a Spanish princess in a marriage of political convenience.
Identities get confused back and forth with a group wanting the marriage to take place and another wanting to murder the ‘count’ to start a war.
Complicating matters is the fact that the real count has fallen in love with the princess without either realizing who it is they have fallen in love with.
As it’s based on a preexisting novel, the story is not only very well structured, but also well adapted for Hope’s cowardly persona and own brand of humor (Bing merely gets a jokey reference.)
With Joan Caulfield, Patric Knowles, Marjorie Reynolds, Cecil Kellaway, Joseph Schildkraut & Reginald Owen.
Another Bob Hope classic comedy.
