Joan of Arc

.

On the morning of 23rd May, the defenders of Compiegne launched an assault against the Burgundians.
Burgundian troops soon surrounded the rearguard, and shouted at Joan of Arc to surrender, eager to capture such a famous figure. She refused.
Finally, a Burgundian crossbowman, maneuvered his horse behind her and grabbed the edge of her cloth-of-gold doublet, and threw her from her horse flat to the ground.
Joan was then taken captive by Burgundian soldiers.

She was abandoned by the new king and the French Court, she had served so well.
The English put Joan on trial on the charges of heresy and witchcraft.
These were all capital offense in the Middle Ages.

During the trial, the young peasant women amazed the court with her brilliant arguments and her knowledge of religion.
During her imprisonment she was tortured and threatened with rape.

The tribunal claimed that the visions and voices that she had heard were demonic and she was a witch.
On the morning of 30th May 1431, she was burned at the stake in Rouen at the age of 19.
