DUST AND STARS--TODAY IN JEWISH HISTORY (Abridged)

Iyar 18: Lag ba-Omer

According to tradition, the plague that took the lives of 24,000 of Rabbi Akiva's students between Passover and Shavuot circa 120 CE because they did not conduct themselves with love and respect for one another, stopped.
In addition, the Yahrzeit (3930/170 CE) of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (Rashbi), one of the greatest disciples of Rabbi Akiva, a leading Tanna of the Mishna and author of the basic work of Jewish mysticism, the Zohar, is commemorated on this date.
The day is celebrated as a minor holiday with bonfires, study and joy.
