*Christie was born in Assam, on her father’s Indian tea plantation but was educated in England and France. She studied acting at London’s Central School for Drama and made her stage debut in 1957.She played "the Dauphin" in a production of Shaw's Saint Joan.
*She was a contender for the role of Honey Ryder in the first James Bond film, Dr. No (1962), but producer Albert R. Broccoli reportedly thought her breasts were too small.Ursula Andress got the role.
*Jane Fonda turned down the role of Lara in Dr Zhivago (1965) because she didn't want to go to Spain for nine months. Several weeks later she changed her mind and told her agent she wanted to do it. By then Julie Christie had been signed to play Lara. Fonda said that of all the movies she turned down, this one is the one she regrets the most.David Lean cast Julie Christie as Lara after seeing her in Billy Liar (1963), and on the recommendation of John Ford, who had directed her in Young Cassidy (1965).
*In movie Darling (1965), she replaced Shirley MacLaine who was originally cast as Diana, but dropped out.Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Monica Vitti were also considered for the role of Diana Scott.Julie Christie's perform as amoral model Diana won her first Oscar as Best Actress in Leading Role.
*In 1967, Julie began a seven-year, intermittent love affair with actor Warren Beatty. She made her first public appearance with Beatty at a sneak preview of Bonnie and Clyde (1967).Beatty told his friends he had asked Julie to marry him, but she refused as she did not want children.While Julie tired of Beatty's womanizing.Julie ended her long love affair with Beatty by phone, in the fall of 1974.
*Time magazine said of her, "What Julie Christie wears has more real impact on fashion than all the clothes of the ten Best-Dressed women combined.".She was a fashion icon during 1960's - 1970's.
