Dark Shadows (1966 – 1971)
One of the oldest pioneers of vampire television, Dark Shadows broke new ground by introducing the mainstream audience to supernatural elements like werewolves, parallel universe, warlocks, zombies, and even time travel. Its premise wasn't glorious, but the complex characters and exploration of social issues was enough to make it popular during the ‘60s. The story begins with Barnabas Collins being released from imprisonment after 200 years and returning to his town to wreak absolute havoc on people.
As vicious as he seemed, our hero was nothing more than a tragic man cursed to prey on his loved ones under the Moon's spell. At four seasons. This outstanding TV show, with more than 1500 half-hour episodes, featured an uncanny blend of Gothic soap opera paired with piercing social commentary. Actor Jonathan Fred played Barnabas with tenderness and fairness at the same time, setting up a template for many future television shows.
