The Westerner


"The Westerner" is a 1940 American Western film directed by William Wyler and starring Gary Cooper, Walter Brennan, and Doris Davenport. The film tells the story of a drifter named Cole Harden (Gary Cooper) who becomes embroiled in a conflict between homesteaders and a self-appointed hanging judge named Judge Roy Bean (Walter Brennan).

The plot revolves around Harden's efforts to stand up to Bean's unjust rule over the town of Vinegaroon, Texas. Along the way, Harden forms a romantic connection with Jane-Ellen Mathews (Doris Davenport), a young woman whose family has been wronged by Bean.

Walter Brennan won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Judge Roy Bean. "The Westerner" is often praised for its strong performances, particularly Brennan's memorable portrayal of the eccentric and tyrannical Judge.
