22nd April 1451
A daughter was born to King Juan II of Castile and his second wife, Isabella of Portugal. She was named Isabella after her mother. Her birth was not significant as she had brothers who would inherit the throne ahead of her.
However, on the death of King Enrique IV, (her half-brother), she claimed the throne of Castile in her own right, and was crowned in Segovia in 1474. Civil war ensued, but Isabella emerged triumphant.
Castile’s Queen solidified her position with marriage to King Ferdinand II of Aragon, therefore uniting the two kingdoms into what we now know as modern day Spain.
