A Prayer I Whisper
“A Prayer I Whisper While Holding My Grandbaby…”
Lord, as I hold this small life, slow my heart enough to notice
what You are doing here.
Let them feel safe
before they ever know fear.
Let them feel loved
before they learn the weight of words.
Rest their tiny heartbeat
against years of prayers
I once whispered for their parent—
prayers I didn’t know
would reach this far.
Cover them, Lord,
in the quiet places.
In the nights that feel too long.
In the days when growing hurts.
Be near before they know to ask.
May they come to know You—
not just in name,
but in nearness.
May they trust You
when the world feels loud,
and walk with You
even when the path feels uncertain.
Teach me how to hold them
without rushing the moment.
How to love without trying to control.
How to trust You with the years
I won’t get to see.
Bless their steps
before they ever take one.
Guard their heart
before it learns how easily it can break.
And when my arms grow tired
and time moves them farther from me,
let them always remember
there was a place
they were prayed over,
held gently,
and loved without condition.
Thank You, God,
for choosing my arms
for this moment.
For letting me witness
how love begins again.
Amen.
