Petey
Today, we honor Petey, the original dog behind the beloved Our Gang character, who passed away in June 1930 at the age of 5–6. Known off-screen as Pal the Wonder Dog, Petey wasn’t just a Hollywood prop — he was a talented and loyal animal star whose natural ring around one eye made him instantly recognizable to audiences of the late 1920s and early 1930s.Petey appeared in numerous Our Gang shorts, delighting viewers with his expressive personality and unwavering devotion to the human cast. More than a performer, he was truly part of the gang, forming bonds with the children on and off camera.
Tragically, Petey’s life ended prematurely when he was poisoned, reportedly by someone holding a grudge against his owner and trainer, Harry Lucenay. He was laid to rest on Lucenay’s ranch in Los Angeles, California, where he had trained and lived. Though others would later portray Petey in films, the original dog remains the heart and soul of the character, leaving a lasting legacy in early Hollywood history.
