As the World Turns and The Edge of Night.

April 2, 1956, two landmark daytime soap operas premiered on CBS: As the World Turns and The Edge of Night.

As the World Turns, created by Irna Phillips as a companion to The Guiding Light, would go on to become one of the longest-running scripted programs in television history, airing until 2010 and focusing on the intertwined lives of families in the fictional town of Oakdale.

The Edge of Night combined soap opera storytelling with crime and mystery elements, standing out for its more suspense-driven tone compared to traditional daytime dramas. Both premieres marked a major expansion of CBS daytime programming and helped define the modern soap opera format.
