April 3, 1956, Elvis Presley made a landmark appearance on The Milton Berle Show, performing live from the flight deck of the USS Hancock in San Diego, California. The broadcast featured his breakout RCA hit “Heartbreak Hotel,” along with performances of “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” marking one of his earliest major national television exposures.The appearance drew an enormous audience, with estimates suggesting that as many as one out of every four Americans tuned in to watch, underscoring the rapidly growing cultural impact of Elvis Presley in 1956. He was reportedly paid between $3,000 and $5,000 for the performance, which helped solidify his rising status as a national sensation.
This was the first of two Milton Berle Show appearances in 1956, with his second later performance of “Hound Dog” sparking significant controversy due to his energetic and suggestive stage movements.
