1849
May 11, 1849: French socialite and salon hostess Juliette Récamier died of cholera at the age of seventy-one. Beautiful, accomplished, and with a love of literature, she was shy and modest by nature, but her salon in Paris was one of the chief resorts of literary and political society that followed what was fashionable. The open criticism of Napoléon Bonaparte along with her refusal to act as lady-in-waiting to Empress consort Joséphine de Beauharnais and her friendship for Germaine de Staël, brought her under suspicion, and she was eventually exiled from Paris by the Emperor, returning after his fall.
