His career was put on hold for a stint in the war. After being wounded, he was sent home and he then in 1916 made his first film and married Janette Ranken the following year. It was said to have been 'a lavender marriage' but it lasted his lifetime. His friend James Whale requested that he play 'Horace Femm' in the upcoming 1932 film, "The Old Dark House" and he agreed to do it and he along with British actress, Eva Moore as his sister Rebecca Femm, stole the film from the four stars and Boris Karloff. In Britain he made "The Ghoul" also with Boris Karloff, and in 1935, he agreed to play Dr. Pretorious in Whales sequel, "The Bride of Frankenstein" with Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, and Elsa Lanchester. Although he has 73 film and TV credits, with his last film being "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone" with Vivien Leigh and Warren Beatty and he was last on stage with Sir Ralph Richardson and Sir John Gielgud in "The Last Joke", he's best remembered for his work with James Whale and Boris Karloff. He died at his home in Kensington on the eve of his 82nd birthday.
