 They say your loved ones in heaven

handpick your baby

that before they were ever placed in your arms
they were held by the ones you miss the most

and i don’t know if that’s true

but sometimes…
it feels like it has to be

because there are moments
where the way she laughs
or the way she looks at me

catches me off guard

like i’ve seen it before
like i’ve felt that kind of love
in a life that came before this one

and it’s not something i can explain

that she carries pieces of something
i once lost

and maybe that’s just what grief does
maybe it makes you look for them everywhere

but if i’m being honest

sometimes when i hold her

it feels less like meeting her for the first time

and more like
getting something back
i didn’t know i’d ever feel again
