You knew what you signed up for
“You knew what you signed up for.”
That’s the line people love to throw at moms when they admit they’re tired, struggling, or overwhelmed. As if the second you became a mother, you lost the right to have feelings.Let me be clear: no one “signs up” to never sleep again. No one “signs up” for postpartum depression. No one “signs up” to lose themselves in the mental load of running an entire household.
Yes, we knew becoming a mom would be hard. But knowing something will be hard doesn’t erase the fact that it is hard. It doesn’t mean we aren’t allowed to say “I’m exhausted.” It doesn’t mean we don’t deserve support.
Stop dismissing moms when they speak their truth. We’re not weak for saying we’re tired. We’re human. And pretending we don’t struggle doesn’t make us better moms it just makes us more isolated.
So next time a mom opens up about how heavy it feels, don’t tell her she “signed up for it.” Tell her she’s seen. Tell her she’s strong. Tell her she doesn’t have to carry it alone.
