The Sheik Steps Out
"The Sheik Steps Out" 1937, directed by Irving Pichel and written by Adele Buffington and Gordon Kahn, was the first of two films Ramon Novarro made for Republic Studios after leaving MGM in 1935. This was a comedy making fun of his silent film, "The Arab". The next film he made was "A Desperate Adventure" 1938, with Marian Marsh. Contrary to some accounts, Novarro did not retire from acting in 1935. He made these two for Republic Studios and three Italian films and then there was a dry spell for films between 1942 and 1949 when he returned in "We Were Strangers" in a supporting role. He also performed on the stage being an accomplished singer as well as an actor.
